No new permits issued for taxi companies since 2010

The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has not issued any new permits for taxi companies since its inception in 2010, Dewan Rakyat was told today.

However during that period, SPAD had issued individual taxi permits for drivers, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, who is the minister in charge of SPAD.

“At this time, taxi companies are allowed to continue operations with their existing permits,” she said in reply to a question from Datuk Irmohizam Ibrahim (BN-Kuala Selangor).

Irmohizam had asked on the need to issue taxi permits to certain companies instead of directly to the taxi drivers.

Nancy reiterated that while there were no new permits for companies, SPAD does issue individual taxi permits for drivers.

She further said that companies with taxi permits have also contributed and played a role in developing the industry.

“For example, some individual permit holders cannot afford to get loan facilities from banks because of various factors like age and previous financial records.

“Companies do offer the rental system where they help the individual permit holder get a taxi via contract, and at the end of the contract, they get to own the car,” she said.

But she agreed that this system has its weakness as it tended to be more beneficial to companies with little regard for the welfare of taxi drivers.

“Amendments to the SPAD Act that were passed last week would enable us to ensure the terms of the contract will fulfil minimum standards, to ensure justice for both the drivers and the companies,” she said.-3/8/2017
